No Money, No Degree
Yesterday I got some expected but difficult news, my research team was not successful in its Templeton Grant application. The understanding that I have with my current department is that I can stay with them as long as I am able to secure enough money for a studentship (to be able to cover my own research costs), and at this moment I am unable to do this. Its funny because in my PhD I have been confronted with obstacle after obstacle… mostly they have been things that were out of my control (population displacement from civil unrest, unethical contract I would have to sell my soul to sign and a change in law that removed my research participants). And so now as I look into the mirror 3 years into my PhD I see a girl who has developed tremendously in her own right and whose
hand is empty of any piece of paper that credits her growth or transformation. If I did not believe that life was more than how successful I am at University I would be sad, perhaps very sad.

The link below will show you a very brief outline of Professor Stein and my project. Forward it to any companies, NGOs or people you think might like to fund such an exciting project.
Back to writing an article now… I will try my best to do this!

I wish I knew of organisations that could support you with your funding… try not to be too disheartened by this news, and hope that things will look up soon.

Awwww… I’m so sorry to hear about this!! I don’t know anyone at this organization, but maybe you could try CARE (http://www.care.org/); they work on women’s issues so maybe there’s somewhere you could go with them? Wish I could be helpful!! I’ll be thinking of you!!

I’m very sorry to hear this. It seems so unjust after you’ve worked so long on your PhD. Overcoming obstacles seems to be one of your specialities. I hope you manage to overcome this one.
How much our lives depend on pieces of paper!

Hi Clare,
My (South African) aunt runs an AIDS charity in South Africa, and they fund local projects over there too. I’m not sure if they would fund something from UK, but I sent her your pdf and she said it looked interesting but she wasn’t sure what assistance you required. Would it be possible to send me a budget I can forward to her?
Good luck!
